DAY 349 / GAME 349 Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender

DAY 349 / GAME 349

Aqua Kitty: Milk Mine Defender

With a name like Aqua Kitty you'd think I was talking about some oddball release on the Sega Genesis along the lines of James Pond.  But Aqua Kitty, Milk Mine Defender is a fairly new shoot-em-up game put up from indie developer Tikipod back in 2012.  I grabbed it on a whim as a part of a Humble Bundle which included a number of other great shoot-em-up games at a 'name your own price', as they do regularly on that site.

I actually purchased this bundle (for PC) based primarily on the amazing chip-tune soundtrack I got a glimpse of in the trailer for Aqua Kitty.  The bundle included a number of the digital soundtracks including this one, so I figured at the very least the small amount I paid would be worth it for the album in itself.  And though this bundle came with a number of games including Really Big Sky and Danmaku in the end I only cared about one game.  Aqua Kitty, Milk Mine Defender.

Aqua Kitty is ridiculously addictive, has a amazing soundtrack and some perfectly retro pixel art.  Aqua kitty works in a looping background where you take on hoards of mechanical fish monsters who are attacking your milk mines.  Each mine is run by a single diver kitty and some bots are designed specifically to capture your kitties.  In this case, you hear the 'meow' and rush to save them, all the while fending off wave after wave of crazed mechanical fish-bots.  The bot designs are particularly neat ranging from angelfish ships to more piranha like chompers.  Your ship runs on a 2D plane and with the click of a button you can reverse direction to quickly run back and save your aqua kitties.

Aqua Kitty, Milk Mine Defender is cheap as heck on Steam if you want a great little shoot-em-up game to play while winding down from The Evil Within or Calls of Duties.  $7.75 CAD nets you a sweet little indie title that is polished as hell and fulfills the inner desire I know you all have more for pixel kitty in your life.

(Seriously, I love the crap out of this game.  It's super fun.)
