DAY 344 / GAME 344 Gears of War 3

DAY 344 / GAME 344

Gears of War 3

After writing about Gears of War 2 recently, I did a bit of research on the (recently) released Gears of War: Judgement; a title which I misconceived as a multiplayer only game.  Turns out, it's got a full single-player campaign.  And more Gears is definitely something I had been waiting for.  So I grabbed it online for about $12 since it's been out for a while now.  That said, now I've got Gears on the mind, and I've yet to write about the third and final installment in the Marcus Fenix storyline.  (Judgement is a precursor to the Gears of War trilogy events and does not involve Marcus Fenix, but instead some of this COG buddies.)

Gears of War 3 really was the big finale that completes the story of the war against the Locust.  As Gears 2 ends, we discover that the fight is much bigger than originally thought.  The imulsion underground which humans had been using to power everything around them had begun to infect both human and locust, creating monsters known as the Lambent.  In this stage of the trilogy, we are now in a fight between the Locust and the Lambent, not to mention the secrets that were hidden from humanity that could have prevented the entire war before it began.

Not everyone's a Gears fan.  But I've loved it since the very beginning.  It may seem like the story follows a bunch of muscley meatheads, whose answer to every problem is to cut it in half with your chainsaw-machinegun.  But the truth is it's not unlike Predator, they may be a bunch of army grunts, but they fight alongside each other as if bound by blood.  And you've got to keep a tough facade when fighting the horrors the Locust has thrown at them.
Gears 3 was nice enough to start including some decent female characters into the mix, equally as tough as the original crew.  They also added an exo-suit weapon for a couple chapters, which was a nice addition and really started to push the story even more than the first two to really seal the trilogy.

I was under the impression that I was going to write about Gears of War 3 forever, but I somehow just lost my train of though.  Final point is, Gears of War was easily one of my favorite game trilogies, especially as of recently.  It's gorgeous, unique and follows some incredible design.  It's got very solid multiplayer and is overall a very polished final product.  I get the impression that Gears of War ended with Judgement, but I'd like to think that in the future, Epic, with or without founder Cliff Bleszinski, will take what they've started and branch off.  Making more Gears of War games within the world, since there's still lots more story to tell prior to and after the original trilogy.
