DAY 101 / GAME 101 Shadow of the Colossus

DAY 101 / GAME 101

Shadow of the Colossus

This was another title that I first heard of on Penny Arcade, only to run out immediately and pick it up.  Now, at the time I hadn't played Ico, which was the previous title in this series. (Though, possibly a sequel.)  If I had however, I may known what I was getting into ahead of time.

Shadow of the Colossus was the first game I had ever played that really solidified the concept in my mind of a game as a piece of art.  From the very beginning with it's gorgeous cinematic opening, to the haunting end.  Everything about the incredible creature design to the environments that housed them, this game, even considering it's age, may be one of the greatest games visually of all time.

In Shadow of the Colossus, you control Wander, a young man who has escaped with the body of the recently sacrificed Mono whom he wishes to resurrect.  In order to resurrect her, he must travel to a hidden valley to find and hunt 12 Colossus.  The entire game is simply composed of your search the next Colossus and then the puzzle of trying to take it down.  In order to find each of the giants you must travel the landscape on your horse, Agro, following a beam of light from you sword.  When you do find one of the beasts, which seem like a kind of living statue, blending living beast with stone and ranging from the large to the absolutely gigantic; You need to figure out how to drop it.

It always requires you locate the beast's weak spot.  In order to do so, you have to use the power of your sword, and then once discovered, you must climb the creature in order to stab it.  Some are easier than others.  But most require great feats in order to scale these moving towers as they attempt to throw you from their body.  There are some absolutely incredible moments involved in the hunt.  One of my absolute favorite is out in the desert where you chase a gigantic flying colossus while on horseback, taking out it's air-bladders with your bow and arrow.  You then proceed to leap from Agro into the giant 's wings and make your way along it's back in order to bring it down from up in the sky.

Shadow of the Colossus is as unique as it is beautiful.  Riding across the serene landscape and waking the giant sleeping statues is something you experience in this game alone.  So much about this game is incredible.  Work on a third game for the series has rumored to have been halted, which is upsetting because it very much appeared to be taking the game even further in all the right directions.  I only hope it will be completed soon.
