DAY 187 / GAME 187 TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

DAY 187 / GAME 187

TMNT IV: Turtles in Time

Back in the late 80's early 90's, it was all about Ninja Turtles.  Boys and girls, old and young, smart and dumb, everyone loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  They really just encompassed everything that was popular at the time.  Skateboarding, pizza, turtles, ninjas and sewers.  It was a perfect storm of content for kids who all wanted to be a superhero, but also wanted to be a slacker goofball with a rat for a Sensei.  Seriously though, I remember the Turtles being a huge thing back when I was in 5th grade.  But it didn't stop there; since their inception the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had a successful animated series, a handful of high-budget live action movies, a huge toy line and a long list of video game adaptations.

There were a number of great Ninja Turtle video games.  I had two great ones for the original GameBoy, I remember played TMNT 1 and 2 with my cousin and brother on his NES when we used to spend the night at his house a long time ago.  There were a few great Arcade titles as well, one which was adapted to the Super Nintendo and possibly the best title to ever grace the Turtles property; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time.  (Yeah, possibly the lengthiest title ever.)   I remember pretty much everyone I knew with a Super Nintendo had a copy of this game and since it was much more enjoyable as a multiplayer game it was a very popular choice when you were over at someone's house.

Turtles In Time was this fantastic brawler, along the lines of Double Dragon, Golden Axe or Streets of Rage.  But of course, it instead consisted of Turtle content.  You could (obviously) choose from each of the four team-members, each with their own specific fighting style and weapons.  (Though, as a brawler they each fought pretty much the same.)  You made your way through New York city atop of skyscrapers and through sewers as you fought the FOOT clan and the lot of Shredder's fiends.  There was of course, various use of the Super FX chip to create different effects by scaling the sprites including throwing enemies into the screen during a special boss fight, as well as it's popular use to create an F-Zero style scrolling floor plane during a sewer chase level.

All-in-all Turtles In Time turned out to be this super well-rounded, responsive brawler that was a ton of multiplayer fun.  Easily the best game in the series, it's even recently been re-released on a few current platforms and saw a 3D re-build that I've yet to try.  Though, I can't imagine it being much better than the original.  Plus, it'll ever have that feeling of a game that you played with all your friends when you were a kid and that's the biggest thing I connect with this game.
